History
Founded by Walter and William Lloyd in 1883 as a company to make bicycles and tricycles, Quadrant developed some of the first motorcycles in 1901. The first Quadrant motorcycle was fitted with the then very popular Minerva 'clip-on' engine. They also made powered tricycles in 1902. Walter took out a patent in 1902 for an 'all-in-one' control lever to raise the exhaust valve, control the ignition switch and operate the throttle and the ignition advance. The LLoyd brothers began designing their own engines from 1903. These were ahead of their time as the engines was not just fixed on to a bicycleframe. Instead, the frame was purpose-built to properly hold the engine, and the Quadrant motorcycles also pioneered a suction inlet valve, hand oil pump and direct drive, as well as a spray carburetor in 1904 and magneto ignition in 1907.A famous long-distance motorcycle rider called Tom Silver was contracted by the company and gained them a lot of publicity through his success on Quadrant motorcycles in long distance events and in 1907 he became the Managing Director. The arrangement was not a success, however, and the Company collapsed from internal disputes in 1907, with Silver leaving to form Silver Motors.
Walter Lloyd bought Quadrant and Tom Silver returned in 1909 but once again Silver was not able to get on with the new owner and left to build motorcycles under his own name. In 1911 Quadrant produced several models, including a 1129cc V-twin and a 600cc single. Production was halted by the First World War, after which they produced a range of 654cc and 780cc single cylinder motorcycles, for which they became well known. They also developed an early prototype of a 292c scooter. In 1924 two models were offered, a 490 cc side valve with bore and stroke of 79x100 and a hefty 624 cc side valve with bore and stroke of 85x110. The Quadrant range included outdated side valve motorcycles and these was updated in 1927 with the launch of a 490cc overhead valve model but it did not sell well and the company was wound up in 1928.

The ZAP Xebra concept car.
The ZAP Xebra is an electric car that was launched in May 2006 in the US market by the ZAP corporation. It is classified legally as a three wheel motorcycle in some jurisdictions, and is available in both sedan (model SD) and pickup (model PK) truck variants. It has seat belts. It does not have regenerative braking. The PK pickup has a dump bed, with fold-down sides and tailgate, that allows easy access to the batteries, controller, motor, and charger.

Company
The Xebra was developed by ZAP, a public company based in Santa Rosa, California.
Characteristics

A ZAP Xebra truck
The top speed of the Xebra is 3640mph (64km/h), with a range of about 20 - 25miles (40km) with the standard batteries, or 40miles (64km) with the optional extended range batteries.
The sedan version can carry up to four people. The listed cargo weight capacity for both the SD sedan and the PK pickup is 1000 lb (460 kg), although PK owners have carried more weight than that.
An optional rooftop-mounted solar panel on the Xebra Xero variant allows for trickle solar charging, which should lengthen the range and life of the six traction batteries; it is also available as a roof over the PK pickup bed.
The 2008 "version 6" all-steel-bodied version of the Xebra sedan is now in production.
The Xebra is the first production vehicle to be imported from China to the USA, and one of the only city speed electric vehicles in production. It is available from licensed ZAP/Voltage Vehicle dealers. According to the owner and dealer reports, some of the early 2006 models had problems with the body work, DC-to-DC converters, controllers, or chargers. They were not properly waterproofed and would degrade and malfunction when wet. Newer models delivered in 2007 are waterproofed and these problems are resolved. More recent models have been greatly improved with many low-quality parts being eliminated in the new production facility. Some replacement parts, even on new vehicles, are hard to find.. Most of these issues have been resolved with the building of and move to a modern high tech moving production line facility. The interruption in production and flow of parts has greatly improved.
According to various news reports, over a hundred and fifty Xebras were sold in 2006. The PK became available in late 2006. According to Zap! 500 Xebra sedans and pickups were ordered by July 2007.
